Element life is a key to unit longevity as it is the part that absorbs the most punishment.

We expect the customer to use the product for a significant period and continually review ways to make the product better. Low watt density elements are the most recent addition to this process.

Elements fail primarily because they are not cooled properly by the fluid flowing past them or the sheath is ruined by an agent in the water. The low watt density elements address the improper cooling issue and not impurities in the fluid being heated. We do also offer titanium sheathing for increased chemical resistance in our CERO line in combination with the low watt density feature. Improper cooling can occur due to a significant air pocket or supply shut off. But, a much more likely cause of failure is the development of hot spots on the sheath that do not allow the fluid to cool the element.

The low watt density elements significantly add to the elements useful life because they operate at a cooler temperature since they have more space to deliver the heat to the fluid being heated. As a result, the gradual mineral buildup on the elements that occurs over time during the heating process is reduced. This lessens the chance of hot spots on the sheath which increases the useful life of the element.

Until recently the lower watt density elements were extremely expensive and so large they would not fit in a compact unit.

We found a product that we are satisfied does the following:
  1. Lasts ten PLUS times as long in the case of a water supply outage as the higher watt density product. We did destructive tests in our plant at both a cold start and a hot start to allow us to make this representation.
  2. Lasts what we expect to be three times as long in a long run usage setting because of its resistance to hot spots on the element created by mineral buildup and the fact that the elements normal usage temperature is much lower than the high watt density element.
    The low watt density element is provided with our standard 800 incoloy sheath, operates between 60 and 85 watts per square inch depending on unit size, and is available only on our 480 Volt and 575 Volt units.
